Exotic
Millcroft Veterinary Group has a long and successful history of treating ‘exotic’ pets. We receive not only clients from the surrounding area, but also referrals from throughout Cumbria. Our exotics specialist is Vicki Temple who is interested in both medical and surgical cases.
“I have always had an interest in the weird and wonderful! It is a fascinating area of work and I enjoy the challenge of keeping up to date with the latest advances in this ever-changing field. As a member of the British Veterinary Zoological Society and the Association of Avian Veterinarians, I regularly attend meetings, which keeps me abreast of the latest ideas. I am a volunteer for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and have been involved in both seal and dolphin rescues in Cumbria. I am an honorary member of the Lakeland Parrot and Bird Keepers Club, regularly contributing to their discussions and newsletters. I am also involved with the Solway parrot and Foreign Bird Club, attending their meetings, shows and giving talks to members. I am keen to help keep local exotic pet owners up to date with changing ideas by arranging and giving talks at the practice and locally. I have experience on a personal level too having shared my home with a variety of birds, reptiles and exotic mammals (and a very understanding husband!)."
What can Millcroft offer the exotic pet owner?
We are not just here to offer treatment to sick pets. We recommend a check up of all newly acquired pets and subsequent yearly health checks. Pre hibernation checks are offered for tortoises to ensure they are in peak condition to start their hibernation. We also offer feather testing for both DNA sexing and disease screening in birds. Vicki is also happy to advise on behavioural issues such as aggression, feather plucking and attention screeching.
In case of illness we are equipped with both good hospital, surgical and investigation facilities and an experienced team to assist you and your pet. We have in-house blood testing facilities and Psittacosis tests, which allow us to have results within an hour. This means treatment can start immediately - a vital factor in the outcome of many cases.
We want the very best for your and your exotic pet; focussing on working with you to promote your pet’s best health, not just putting things right when they go wrong!
