Hounds
Dating back to the 18th century, hound trailing is one of Cumbria’s oldest and most cherished traditions. The sport originated from friendly rivalries between local farmers, each claiming to own the fastest pack of hounds. To settle the debate, they created a form of drag hunting, where hounds race along a trail scented with an artificial, non-animal-based scent—typically aniseed. These races, held throughout the scenic Lakeland countryside, became a way to test speed and stamina, and have since grown into a beloved rural sport of hound trailing.
In 1906, the Hound Trailing Association (HTA) was established under the leadership of Robert Jefferson from Whitehaven to oversee and promote the sport. Today, the Association, now known as the Hound Racing Association (HRA), continues to uphold this proud tradition, with over 500 members and races held across the Lake District.
